Set in Edo during the Bakumatsu period, the story follows Hijikata Toshizo, a former street fighter who once spent his days in constant conflict. His life begins to change after meeting Kondo Isami, Yamanami Keisuke, and Okita Soji, as he finds a sense of belonging at the Shieikan dojo.
After a deadly encounter with the assassin Okada Izo, they form a strong bond and vow to fight together again. However, upon traveling to Kyoto with great ambitions, they are confronted by the violence and instability of the era, including the influence of Serizawa Kamo.
